Some may argue that the jewels a star wears on the Oscars red carpet are more memorable than the dress. Who can forget the Fred Leighton diamond necklace that Michelle Williams wore with her canary yellow Vera Wang gown to the awards show in 2006? Or, how about in 1999, when Cate Blanchett wore $110,000 worth of diamonds on the straps of her Jimmy Choo high heels?
These mesmerizing moments are created in collaboration with the celebrity's stylist and a chosen jeweler, and, according to the best in the business, there's a formula to follow when creating a striking jewelry-dress combination that will leave people talking for years to come.
First, to secure the evening's sparklers, which are typically borrowed, the stylist works their connections with a high-profile jeweler. However, that wasn't always the case, according to Martin Katz, who has previously adorned Nicole Kidman in diamonds. "In the early days, through the ’90s and even mid-2000s, we had a much more direct contact with the celebrity," he told the Boston Globe. "They would come in personally, most of them. We would work together, choose things. Today it is morphed into the stylists. They control that."
During the Academy Awards, Katz says an actress, on average, can wear anywhere between $200,000 and $1 million worth of jewelry. Though, this figure can reach further heights.
Diamonds are the most coveted stone on the red carpet, but Katz believes a colored jewel can feel more of the moment, saying: "To me, sometimes there is more of a stylized fashionable statement that’s made with color."
However, trends, like colored stones, aren't immediately obvious during awards season, but the Golden Globes can be a good indicator of what's to come during the Oscars. This year, Forevermark Diamonds's Kristen Trustey predicts bib necklaces will be a hit. "Allison Williams wore an incredible 43-carat bib necklace to the Golden Globes which was incredible, so expect to see a lot more of those," she told the Boston Globe.
